Don’t worry, it’s much gentler than it sounds. Instead of aggressively scrubbing like the ‘mechanical’ exfoliants with the apricot pieces mentioned above, once applied, it works all by itself. Salicylic acid belongs to the beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs) that are lipophilic (fat-loving). This allows it to penetrate the oily, upper layer of skin and cleanse deep down. Dirt and other residues are transported to the surface, leaving behind clear, fine-pored skin. What’s the catch? Sounds too good to be true? There is one tiny catch to this story: the impurities that are ‘brought to the surface’ are to be taken literally. In the first few days after application, everything that has been slumbering beneath the top layer of skin comes to the surface. Then it’s a case of staying patient and definitely not squeezing! To avoid any unpleasant stinging, you should also give the salicylic acid a break for a while.
