Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring polysaccharide, or more precisely, a so-called glycosaminoglycan. It is produced by the body’s own cells and is found in large quantities almost everywhere in the human body. Particularly in the skin, joint fluid, intervertebral discs and the vitreous humour of the eye. Due to its complex spatial structure, hyaluronic acid has the special property of being able to bind very large amounts of water relative to its mass. For example, it acts as a lubricant, contributing to the friction-free movement and stability of the joints. In the skin, hyaluronic acid ensures the natural elasticity and firmness of the connective tissue.
As we age, the natural levels of hyaluronic acid decrease
By the age of 50, we only have half the original amount of hyaluronic acid in our bodies. In the skin, this contributes to reduced elasticity and the formation of wrinkles – the suppleness of our skin diminishes.
Why is hyaluronic acid included in so many products, from day creams to contact lenses?
This is mainly due to the fact that hyaluronic acid can achieve very effective moisture retention and has virtually no side effects.
What treatments are available with hyaluronic acid?
In the field of aesthetic medicine, the injection of hyaluronic acid is certainly the best-known application. This is used to fill in wrinkles and restore lost volume, mainly in the face. Lips are also contoured and plumped up with hyaluronic acid. This allows a soft effect to be achieved. It is interesting to note, however, that collagen synthesis is also stimulated.
However, hyaluronic acid can also be added during microneedling to provide the skin with additional moisture. When hyaluronic acid is included in skincare products, its physical water-binding capacity helps to support the skin’s moisture levels.
Do viscosity and concentration matter?
The key factor is the appropriate molecular size, measured in Daltons for hyaluronic acid. The smaller the size, the deeper the hyaluronic acid penetrates the tissue. The skin always breaks down hyaluronic acid immediately. This process takes days to months. Cross-linked hyaluronic acid, e.g. combined with peptides in fillers, lasts up to 10 months.
However, hyaluronic acid is also encapsulated in topical products, such as creams and serums. This extends the shelf life from 8 days to several weeks. However, depending on the area of the face or body, age and gender, the breakdown still occurs rapidly on an individual basis.
