What quality aspects are given particular attention?
Not all bee venom is the same – there are huge differences in quality! The be-all and end-all for the effectiveness of an ointment containing naturally pure bee venom is its quality. It is important to know what determines this: the higher the proportion of melittin in the bee venom, the more effective the end product. Chemically speaking, melittin is a cationic polypeptide composed of more than 20 amino acids, which, in high-quality bee venom, accounts for at least 50% of its total content. However, its proportion varies greatly across quality grades: from around 35% (poor quality) to 70% (top quality).
Differences in the quality of bee venom
Unfortunately, you cannot tell the quality of the bee venom used from the packaging: the label merely highlights its chemical INCI declaration (APITOXIN or BEE-VENOM).

Our bees are milked
No bee dies for your ointment. Whilst a bee loses its stinger due to the barbs when stinging human skin and thus dies as a result of the sting, this is not the case when harvesting bee venom! A gentle method encourages the hard-working insects to sting: specially designed glass plates are set up with a wafer-thin film covering, interwoven with the finest metal threads. A low electrical current and slight vibration simulate an ‘enemy in the hive’ for the bees. If the bee stings through the film onto the glass plate because of this assumption, its stinger cannot become lodged in the hard glass. It simply secretes a tiny drop of venom onto the glass plate and can withdraw its stinger again unharmed.
The venom now on the plate contains a pheromone scent component which puts other bees on alert through smell and, in turn, encourages them to sting as well. The bees are neither killed nor injured in the process. In effect, only a tiny drop of their venom is ‘elicited’ by simply stimulating the bee’s natural defensive instinct. Given that each worker bee is responsible for defence as a ‘guard bee’ for only a few days whilst carrying out its various tasks within the hive, a single bee is rarely used twice during the harvesting of bee venom.
